Main Stage Opera Program (Bizet's Carmen)  
Jun. 25-Aug. 6, 2017 (Arrive 6.25, Depart 8.6)

(Opera rehearsals Mon-Fri (2-5p, 7-10p) and participation in pit orchestra for fully staged conservatory production of Carmen, Play keyboard in the pit orchestra for fully staged community production of Musical TBA, Participate in Art Song Class and Recital, additional participation in Festival Concerts and student recitals)

Instrumental Chamber Music/
Vocal Accompanist                                                                
August 6-August 14, 2017

Any pianist accepted into the SOARS, Musical or Main Stage program may elect to stay in Bay View August 6-14 for one additional chamber music concert with wind, strings or brass.  This pianist will also accompany vocal lessons for the American Negro Spiritual Institute under the direction of Dr. Everett McCorvey (National Chorale, American Spiritual Ensemble, Dir. Of Opera, University of Kentucky)

  •        Pianists may apply for any combination of programs. Each program will be individually tailored to the applicants experience and goals for the summer.

  •      Full and partial fellowships for all programs are available by audition and phone interview.  A full fellowship would cover the cost of tuition, room and board.  Housing is provided to all festival students.  Piano fellows are responsible for all travel expenses to and from Bay View.  A limited number of opportunities exist for making income during the summer while at Bay View through church jobs, teaching community piano lessons and freelance work.

  •     Our major productions in 2016 are Bizet's Carmen (rehearsals and performances occur during Main Stage program only; conservatory singers are cast in all lead roles) and Musical TBA (rehearses during SOARS and performances occur during the Main Stage program; both conservatory students and community members are cast).

  •     Opportunities to play instrumental chamber music may be also be available according to interest and scheduling logistics with the instrumental program.  The Bay View Conservatory instrumental chamber music program consists of 28 students (two string quartets, two woodwind quintets, two brass quintets) and 20 instrumental faculty members.

SOARS Program

·       Rehearse and give two performances of fully staged opera scenes (sung in original language with piano); one run-out performance and one performance in John M. Hall Auditorium (Bay View, MI)

·       Receive individual Art Song Coachings and perform in an Art Song Recital

·       Collaborative piano seminar covering topics relevant to the field

·       Accompany vocal lessons 

·       Weekly private lessons on topic of your choice (piano/chamber, vocal coaching, organ)


Main Stage Program
June 25-August 6, 2017
(12-14 singers and 3 collaborative pianists)

Bay View Music Conservatory will present a fully staged production of Bizet's Carmen (sung in French, performed with orchestra) and the Bay View Festival will present a fully staged production of Musical TBA (sung in English, performed with pit orchestra)

Collaborative Piano Program contents may include:


·       Rehearsal pianist for Bay View Conservatory’s production of Carmen

·       Accompany coachings (led by the conductor) of Carmen

·       Gain experience as répétiteur for Carmen

·       Art Song Seminar with Main Stage vocal students (master class format), concluding in a public recital

·       Accompany vocal lessons 

·       Perform in weekly student recitals (collaborative and/or solo repertoire)

·       Collaborative piano seminar covering topics relevant to the field

·       Thriving in the Arts seminar covering practical career strategies (auditions, resumés, networking, marketing, social media, university teaching, etc.) 

·       Weekly private lessons on topic of your choice (piano/chamber, vocal coaching, organ)

·       Opportunity to play in the pit orchestra of Carmen and the musical

·       Optional courses may include Feldenkreis, and various Chautauqua educational offerings

2. Repertoire list (solo and vocal rep required, instrumental or chamber music optional)

3. Provide a brief summary of your collaborative piano and coaching experience and state what you hope to gain from attending the Bay View Music Festival.  

4a. All piano auditions require submission of recordings.  Video is preferred but audio will be accepted.


Submit three recordings chosen from the following:

     One aria or ensemble from any opera by Mozart, Rossini, Puccini or Verdi

     Two art songs in any language

     One selection of music theater, jazz, or American Songbook   


4b. For partial to full scholarship consideration, additionally submit any one of the following recordings: 

     Any solo piano piece (single movement is acceptable) 

      Any song from Ariettes Oubliées by Debussy 

      “Cäcilie” “Kling!” “Heimliche Aufforderung” or “Ständchen” by Richard Strauss

      "Rejoice greatly, o daughter of Zion" from Messiah by Handel

      "No Word from TomQuietly Now… I go, I go to him." (Anne Truelove's aria from The Rake's Progress)by Stravinsky
